We are here to listen

The Listening Ear Crisis Intervention Center has been open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year since July 15, 1969. We provide free and confidential service for telephone and walk-in clients in crisis.

We define crisis as “any situation in which your normal coping mechanisms are ineffective or unavailable.”

Our volunteers are trained to deal with many crises, including:

  • Depression
  • Suicide
  • Loneliness
  • Sexual assault
  • Grief

We also provide referrals for services throughout the Greater Lansing area and beyond via 2-1-1, which spearheaded by United Ways and information and referral agencies in various states and local communities. FYI – the 2-1-1 referral database will open in a new window.

We have an all-volunteer staff. Volunteers receive more than 65 hours of training before ever picking up the phone. All director and coordinator positions are filled by volunteers. Many staff members choose to receive additional training in order to join our sexual assault counseling staff or to become trainers themselves.
